View Full Version : Newbie brake fluid help needed

ok guys, still learning about the whole workings of the bike. but the brake master cylinder by the front brake lever. is that supposed to have brake fluid in it??? and if so should i fill it up when it gets low??? give me the run down guys???

yep. One thing I (and most of us) recomend . . . get a shop manual. You think you may not need it, but since I have bought one I consult it often.

Best $30-40 you'll ever spend.

Yeh Icy, just use the type fluid recommended on your reservior top, fill to the upper fill line and you should be ok. Make sure not to use a different type as some are not compatible and will react with each other. And ditto on the shop manual. Clymer is usually best in my opinion. Closely followed by the factory service manuals. But the factory manuals assume you know basic things sometimes... :)

Oh yeah, you do know where your rear reservior is to check it too, right?

i have a shop manual. it just said to do that when you change the brakes, i was just makin sure i was gonna do any damage if i filled it back up w/o changing the brakes, and got the same stuff thanks guys. appreciate the help.

ICY, don't fill it up to much because when you go and put the cap back on it will oveflow. the diaphragm sticks below the cap and if there's no room for it the fluid flows out the sides. be careful with brake fluid it will eat paint.
