Ever thought about doing your own carbon fiber work??? I was just goofin around on Ebay and found these....
the 19oz

or the 5.7oz

I was thinking how hard would it be to make Frame Covers, or Triple clamp covers, or Chain gaurds, or "ram air" covers, or whatever you wanted!!! I mean how hard can it be to get a good fit as long as you make it perfect with "overhang". So that when it is done hardening you have to trim it down with the sander and then cover it with clear coat??? I would love to try this. But I am nervous at the same time. I don't want to mess up anything that I need. If I get good at it though, I could make the carbon fiber fairing peices.
For 70 bucks though I might just try it. But then I might also just get some of the carbon fiber and use fiberglass resin at first to try it out. If it is anything like Fiberglass, this is going to be tuff. I hate working with fiberglass!!! :o

I'm too lazy to do it. But if you (or FormulaExtreme - where'd he go???) ever get to the point where you are willing to CF over my tank, I'll pay ya. :D And you're closer, I could just drive it up to you...
I say go for it, never hurts to try. A bit pricey at $70, but if it works - and it probably will - it'll pay you back tenfold being able to make your own stuff! And the bragging rights? Holy cow! :D

John. $70 and you'll finally have a COMPLETELY carbon fiber bike. This isn't eating away at you? To be soooooo close to completion. Just $70 away from perfection.
And if need be, I'd help out. Spring break is coming, so I'm sure I'll have at least one day where I'm not working for 12 hours.
I can't think of what I'd do with the silver, but I like it a lot. Hmmm, could cover the frame with it...

O.K. you could drive it "down" to me. :p
But Jawhn would you want a cover or a replacement tank??? Cuz, I think OPP makes a replacement carbon fiber tank, maybe it is somebody else, but I have seen tanks out there...
If all you want is a cover. How would you guys go about making a mold. I have a few Idears in mind. One includes plaster of paris and the other is with expanding spray foam and a cardboard box.
But give me some idears. My brain is on overload!!! Oh, and would you guys use the complete kit or try for the carbon sheet with fiberglass style resin??? I think I will do it that way first.
I will be trying very soon though!!!

Oh hey Jawhn, I have talked to someone at an aerospace engineering facility that does alot of CF work. Well I kinda mentioned the "fit and finish" problem you had with your CF bodywork. They mentioned that if you have a really good hand and are comfortable with doing it. Try heating the CF pieces. If you heat them to a certain degree they should be plyable (bendable) and you could bend them in to where everything lines up better. Then let cool, and "hello" nice fitting fairings again!
But that is just what I've heard.... I don't know if I would do it to my fairings though... But you do have that other NEW right mid. So give that a try on your right mid, then if it works COOL. If it doesn't then you have a piece to replace it with.;)

Wow. Somehow I skipped right over this. Thanks for PMing me. Can you find out around what temp I'd need to get it? I don't want to burn it and/or have it too cold and have it break... Hairdryer? Heat Gun? Propane torch?

From what I have heard the guy says to use a heat gun. And do it like you would bend/form abs.
Like I said tho try a different piece of CF if you have one, first. Then if it works try the good stuff.
Ya know what? Now that I think about it, I have an old triple clamp cover out of CF that I will give a try.

ya know what is better? get the pre-preg carbon fiber parts not lockhart ****.
the heat gun idea is a good one but it only works on FLEXABLE cf not the stiff thin crap.
