I am going to give this a try!!! I found this on another forum.
This guy makes his own seat cowl out of an old rear seat! It turned out pretty damn good too!!!

I have been following this thread too it sounds like a good prodject. But with spring around the corner I don't know if I want to get tied up in something like this.

I think it would be cool to do the seat cowl and then after sanding the fiberglass put a sheet of carbon fiber on top followed by a couple of coats of resin.

That's funny! I came up with that exact idea about 8 months ago when I was rebuilding my bike. I needed a hinge assembly and the guy from Ebay ended up sending me a '99 seat (torn cover) along with it. I did all the same steps this guy did, but the fiberglass was a PITA to work with. I couldn't get the mat to lay up on the backside of the seat frame. It got real messy. I got frustrated.
In the end I cut my losses and threw it in the trash! Went out and bought an ABS Targa brand cover for $190 and couldn't have been happier! Figured that if I was being paid $15 an hour to work on it, there was definitely more than 12 hours of work to build that (plus, the materials alone will cost you about $40 or so extra). So I just bought the ABS one, which was a much better quality.
DIY is definitely fun, but that is faaaaar too much work for me!
Cheers.
