I was hoping that you guys could help me help a friend. He rides a R6, I know, I know, its not a Honda and thats his first problem. But he does not have access to the net, so cant post his own stuff. When he is sitting at a light, his lights get real dim, and the flasher dont work, everything works fine when he revs it up. On a car I would think the alternator is fried, but Im not sure if there is an alternator on a bike or if its some other form. Can you guys give me some direction?? Is there an altenator on street bikes, if so is it hard to replace? I know on a car, a quick test is to disconnect the battery while the car is running (or at least I have been told). Any thoughts??

Cheers

Lights dimming at idle is normal. Bikes have an Alternator (Stator) behind the LHS engine cover. The are easy to replace but rarely go south. The low rev's mean that the alternator isn't generating enough power to produce 13+ volts to run the bike/charge the batter so it's only taking 12.5v from the battery. When you rev the volts go up over 14v and so everything get's brighter.

You say however that the lights get "real dim" so it's probable that the battery isn't holding charge. That'd be my first port of call. Take it to a mecanic/battery shop and ask them to load test the battery. Alternativly, turn high beam on, switch the kill switch to 'OFF' and crank the bike for about five seconds. Then do it two more times. A bad battery will loose it's charge very quickly and you'll notice the engine cranking getting slower. A good battery you won't notice a difference.

Yamaha make good regulators so I wouldn't suspect that just yet.

If the above fails, follow the attached trouble shooting chart.

Shorthand for Regulator/Rectifier. We've had a lot of threads about them lately, he probably figured you knew what he was referring to.

They go bad a lot apparently... Glad mine's still good. Although I may have just jinxed it now. :D

It's probably throwing a hissy fit because it hates being stock. It's been known to happen.

So an aftermarket mod like exhaust or a PC3 will fry the harness? Oooook. You work in customer service?

I was making the same joke as I did with Jawhn when he posted a picture of his fuel leaks around the carbs. "It's crying because it's stock." I didn't mean to run some aftermarket electric stuff.

LOL, I knew that dealing with people & dumb questions all day would get to you. :D

nah i suffer from migrane headaches now so my thoughts are not always clear.
yeah the migranes are from massive head trauma caused by a korean turnning left in front of me and forcing me to learn how to walk and use my left hand again..........**** the korean drivers get em off the road especialy the women the ****ers are blind.

That sucks about your accident. Any permanent damage??

Is there any tests I can run on his bike, like check the voltage drop or something?? With the bike running, and if the reg/rec is not working, then there wouldnt be 12v at the battery, correct?? He said that the main light dims at idle (when he stops) and the signals dont work until he revs it up. Do its obviously not getting enough juice at idle, correct?

here is the easy test........look at the reg/rec....is the plug burned or melted?
replace the reg/rec and repair the harness. it will work fine then. also check the bastards headlight bulbs. the rating on the bulb should be no higher than 55/60.....any higher and the battery suffers. as far as a charge test get a volt meter check the batt. voltage should be 12.6 or higher. start the bike and rev it to 5,000 the voltage should be no higher than 14.9 volts and no less than 14. at idle it should be 13.5 or higher.

oh yeah i have brain damage and my right hip is half dead cause the doc cut my nerve cluster in my leg when he pulled bone to rebuild my wrist. i also have massive arthritis in major parts of my joints from the impact.

Thanks for the info guys. I will let my buddy know, and he can try some of this stuff out and see what happens.

Man, that sucks about your injuries, so you can still ride fine??
