View Full Version : Why a wet clutch?

I've always wondered. Why do so many bikes have wet clutches? It seems bassackwards to have a clutch immersed in oil. Beyond that, it'd be lighter without the extra oil. The oil system would have an easier time without having to lubricate so many parts. And without the oil, the case could be thinner like the paper-thin carbon fiber ones that Ducati runs with lightening holes.
So what's the advantage or pupose in having a wet clutch? No other vehicles run wet clutches.

cooling and cleaning rob, the maintenance is lower and the clutch is less likely to " smoke " or explode. and sea-doo uses a wet plate clutch for the 4-stroke supercharged watercraft.
there are a couple of companies that will make you a conversion kit to go dry if you wish.

I don't really care either way. Just wonder why wet. And I wonder who thought to themselves, "I'm going to put two grippy surfaces together in a lubricant. Yeah, that's a solid idea." :D

hardley movinson is to blame for that........ it acctualy is better than dry.......seems strange huh?...it took the japanese to make it work right though.....and the italians.........well.......if they could produce a vehicle that doesn't require extreem maintenace....they just might have somethin.
