I used a red 3M pad (metal) to sand and Duplicolor 1200 high temp on my headers and it only grayed a tiny bit at the first bends. It looks brown when wet but dries a nice flat black.
On my canister and exhaust bracket I used Krylon BBQ (1200F) paint and it looks way better IMO because it has little flecks mixed in.

I just wanna make sure the paint sticks real good. I don't wanna deal with it flakin in a month or have it rub off if my wifes foot rubs it

i agree with gixxerkiller. ur best bet is to get it powder coated. it's resisitant to high temperatures and very durable. i once asked about powder coating my frame and was quoted about 300 dollars cdn. i'm guessing since a mufflers a much easier part to work with, it should be less than that.
