After I finished the GSXR tail, I wasn't really happy with the fit of the Corbin seat I had. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to make a custom seat out of the stock seat. It is plenty thick and is easily modified.

Just pull out the staples holding on the cover. Using my Corbin as a guide for the layout of the new seat, I used an electric cutting knife, and my angle grinder with a sanding disc to smooth out the shape.

I need to add a piece in the front to make it higher, and I want to add a custom piece in the back to give it a real custom fit look. I'm going to the foam store to pick up some foam and spray adhesive.

Then the final shaping and design will begin. After it's finished I'll take it to an upolstery shop to get a nice cover.

I couldnt help notice your Rectifire isnt on the subframe... Thought it needed to be bonded to the sunbframe for grounding purposes. I take it, that its not true because the bike is still charging and not burning out...

No, it's got a ground wire but it does need a heat sync... hence the metal back plate and bolted to aluminum frame.

When I did the custom tail, I actually welded on another plate on the inside of the subframe. This way the reg sits back and doesn't get in the way of the tail.

As far as the back of the reg goes, it does two things. One it is a heat sink and does dissipate heat into the subframe. It also grounds it self to the frame. It has a ground wire as part of the wiring harness but uses the ground to the subframe to detect the standing voltage of the battery then charge it if necessary.

One of the reasons the regs burn out or burn out batteries, is that after a couple of years the subframe aluminum get a layer of oxidation on it and the reg doesn't get the correct voltage reading. Then overcharges the battery which burns out the reg, battery, or both. A great fix for this is to run a ground wire from one of the bolts to the negative battery terminal. Use a big round eye wire end, and put the bolt through it squishing it between the reg and the frame. This will keep the reg grounded and working properly.

Here's a pic where you can see the plate I added. This is looking from inside the subframe toward the regulator side of the bike.

Seats done! It turned out great and feels fantastic. Total cost for the seat was $100. $90 for the custom upholstery and $10 for spray adhesive for mounting the foam.

It a big improvement over the Corbin.

Time to go for a ride!
