View Full Version : My bike has a problem

I have a problem similar to Neonspeeds. It started a few days after I ran out of fuel (tank was on reserve I thought it wasn't. Resulting in a long push to petrol station on a hot suuny day in full leathers). Now I has developt a miss fire which is a bit scary to think it could do it when I am knee down on a corner. Anyway what happens is the rev counter drops to zero at various speeds/revs then it will backfire and the bike will return to normal for a while. It has a race can and K & N filter but hasn't been dynojetted yet.

oh another thing it has done is cut out at 5mph then refuse to start either in nuetral or gear with clutch in for a while. Then after a number of attempts it will start up.

Please help!!

Sounds like you might have a fuel problem.

I am thinking you might have pulled in some dirt/debris when you ran the tank down so far.

Check your carbs to make sure there is no dirt inside.
or
Could there be a possibility there is air in the line?

No-Mercy will probably shed a little better light on this.

No mercy... What ya think he is? a mechanic? lol/jk

Besides a good check on your plugs, which really wouldnt cause whats going on I would say calkid pretty much hit the spot. if your tank ran dry, you probably got something the carbs....

The air in the hose, would pretty much work its self out.

Make sure you use good fuel good fuel clean fuel, and check your fuel filter. Check the carbs, too see if they need cleaning. if they do, clean them. you do have a can and an aftermarket filter, you also might want to get it jetted, aswell as a sync after its jetted to get peek performance.

just my 2 cents...

no archer im not a "mechanic" (i may be one but that doesnt mean anything, there are good mechanics and bad mechanics)...im a enthusiast!!!!!and to be a mechanic is just the beginning...experience is what counts..and i dont think im something special, just to let you know.however, about your problem trouser...the guys might be right with the fuel problem(especially since you runned the tank empty),but a backfire appears mostly due to a ignition failure.anybody recognized the rev counter wich dropped to zero and then backfiring engine..like trouser said??no?has nothing to do with fuel (backfire maybe has,in some cases, but not the rpm counter!).JUST cause of the rev counter i think its the ignition (yes archer...im not blaming it on the fuel pump..just because the rrx didnt have one though :D ..but you blame it on the carbs all the time :D lol).either the cdi or plugs (yes archer you mentioned that already.. :p )or something else on the ignition (or related with it)..but if you need more help from us let us know more and what you have tried already!!just because of that rpm counter i think of a bad cdi box or connection!check it!!

Now I feel bad.......sorry. :o

I will have you know Chris, I don't eat doughnuts... ;)

In the six years I have been a cop I have yet to step foot into a doughnut shop in uniform.

Actually I am working out now and eating healthy.

Ah, yea... anyway...

I had similar problems to what you describe.

One time I had water in my tank and the bike would cut out and not want to start until I left it sit for a while. I was far from home so I just kept starting it up and ride until it stopped again. A few miles from home it seem like it finally blew all the water out as I had no further problems.

Also, recently my bike was in a slight accident where the bike ended up on its side and a little inverted due to the slope of the road. The bike ran fine for a while but would just die. I found that if I released the gas cap it would start right back up again. Thought I may have had a pinched vacuum line but found out the evap canister was full of gas. I could never get the thing cleaned out so I just pulled it off the bike. no more problems.

I would check the tank for water or debris and also check the lines to make sure none of them are plugged up.

Oh, and what year is your blade?

Funny.

Actually I have seen that system before. I just don't have a need to hide my plate.

I am sure you have figured it out by now I am a police officer, so I don't really care for the purpose of the Fast Tags.

Archer 900RR
January 11th, 2005, 09:53 AM
HAHA, there he goes, blasting Fast Tags now. lol Yeah he doesnt need tags, he has a badge... Thats better than Fast Tags..

Personally I think they should be illegal here in the states... Well in ohio atleast. Most bikes around here look identical and anyone could get free gas, run from the police [which is fun sometimes i hear] or anything to wimp out on something someone did and doesnt want to be man enough to admit he/she was wrong. Its a cool idea, but I like the child harness better! lol

Even though i have hit my plate numerous of times with my rear tire...I Figure it would be good at the track if you ride your bike there from the home. who knows, not for me, I would get shot by state highway patrol if they found out I had one of those.
What I really want is the Stealth system on the bike. It has a rader det. Radar Jammer, laser jammer. Totally undetectable from anything the law enforcment can hammer at ya! all for under $1000. lol now I just have to start counting my pennies.

I can think of better things to do with $1000 than buy a jamming device.

Here in Ca. it is ok to own a detector but a violation to have a jammer.

thats crazy, I can not see where its legal to have them at all, but they are so small you can not really see them. I am not sure if they are legal here in Ohio either. I know it was made by an ex cali trooper, and was tested with Cali's Finest troopers with their best equipment.. They say it worked. Saw it on a bike show once, and read about it in one of my mags..

That guys for all your help you have given me a lot of things to try and check. I am going to get it jetted next month Archer. The blade is a 99 in the cadbury boost purple/gold Kahuna. I am not sure it is a water problem because I have filled it up a couple of times since and I have even put a fuel cleanse through it as well. It then works fine for a while and has now decided to come back. I will try all the suggestions though you never know.

I have also drained the float bowls as well bu there wasn't any visible dirt in the fuel that came out.

Archer 900RR

So it is getting a fuel supply then? it has to be something in your fuel system, if not the fuel, check your spark...

Anything else I have fogotten, [no-mercy] fill it in.

i tell you guys something especially calkid.you know in swiss you cant do nothing to the bike without making it illegal.no exhaust no nothing.and we have those kinds of radar here wich make a picture of you if you go to fast.(each km/h per hour you pay 20$,imagine what happens with 250 on the highway).and there are many more differences in swiss wich make it necessary to hide the plate...not because you are afraid of anything, but you can save yorself a lot of trouble and money!!thats why i would use it and i ordered some already!i was just wondering about the opinion of you guys about this.of course its not right..but what is right in this world??i just try to protect myself with that and get some freedom back that you dont have at all overthere, you guys have it easy here, trust me!!!!!!

Hey no mercy... WE dont need your "I am going to get a ticket bullshit here" just move if they mail you a ticket. hahahaha Just kidding man..

I can see where it can come in handy. And its true we too have cameras posted to catch people speeding and running through an intersection or trying to beat a light. They snap shot your plates, and you soon find out you have a ticket in the mail... So I can see where it would be a great Idea to save your own ass. However, I can also see alot of people taking advantage of it. pumping at the gas station, flip up the plate, then take off like a bat out of New Jersey. That causes fuel prices to go up. Everytime someone steals something, somethign always goes up...

I feel others can use it, and by the sounds of it, you'd be a great canidate for it being in switz with the cameras and all, but someone like me really does not need it, because I dont always obay the law on the roads, but I have Great fucking vision and can see pretty far down the road to know if I see a MARKED car or not... nah thats just bullshit, I somewhat follow the laws on the road. but I have not been caught yet. Close calls, but not yet. Personally if i was going to track days, then I would use it, because I do not own a truck or a trailer, so I would have to ride hte bike there, flip it on the track because our track, no plates, and no lights... Figure thats pretty much everywhere.

So its all about opinions I guess. I wouldnt use it unless I was out on a track. but those days are some time from me right now..
Tell us about it when you get it installed man

I tell you this, if for some reason our city went to cameras for speeding, you can bet your sweet ass I would have one of those Fast Tags.

We already have the cameras for the red light runners, but that is out of necessity. I personally try to adhere to the law, since I enforce it, but hey I am only human and not Robo Cop, even though I have been called that.

But then again I am not in a traffic unit, I strictly deal with violent crime and narcotics. So therefore, I know I abide by the law when it comes to this.
