Hi all....Litterally just got back from a little blast and has just discovered an oil leak!!!!! Talk about piss me off!!!!
Right, its comming from behind the front sproket...
My questions...
Can i change the oil seal by just taking sprocket off and lever out old and in with new???
I have a bit of a whinning gearbox, sooooo could it possibly be where my bearings are worn they may be ever so slightly be oscillating and maybe caused the oil seal to go????
I do ride hard, would it be an idea to just strip it back change the bearings replace seal and sling it back together???
If i do strip it down how much of a pain in the arse is it?? and which gaskets will i need to replace???
Im not a novice with mechanics but never delved into gearboxes, but a mate of mine rebuilds car and van boxes everyday and will be on hand....
What is the best way to sort this so i can get back out there on the back wheel????
:CONF
Cheers all....

If it's whining, I would tear it down and see what's up. As for difficulty, it's hard to say how hard it is for someone else. I personally don't think it's that difficult, but just my personal opinion. Get all 3 manuals and study them closely. The factory has correct specs and the Haynes and Clymer have great pics.

Cheers RACER...
Have been to my local dealer today and ordered the oil seal and have found out its not possible to replace from outside as it has a flange on it which holds it in the crankcase...
Soooooo, i have to get the motor out and split crankcase get the gears out and replace the oil seal.... alot of work in my opinion just for a poxy oil seal.... oh well, at least i will get a chance to see what wear the transmission has and see what needs replacing.... the first bearing behind the oil seal (front sprocket) doesnt come as a single item either.... u have to buy it already on the shaft!!!! £188 + VAT!!!!! Hope that bearing is ok hey...lol
Oh well will keep u all updated on how it goes and try n get sum pics up too....

Good Luck
I personally wouldn't want to mess with the trans. But thats me
I'll pull the rest of it apart and avoid the gears as much as possible:skep:
Hey good luck with you adventure...:V

Right.... started doin work on the blade today....
We had a brainwave and put it in to action... instead of taking the engine out and working on it we drained the fluids from the bike and litterally hung the bike upside down.... yes u heard me right.... and it is soooo much easier to work on stripping everything off we needed to...
Found one of my clutch plates had snapped into 3 peices....
We are just splitting the crankcase now and will get into the trans to see how things are looking....
Bit of a pain in the arse job but learning a hell of alot from it all the same....
Some pics....

But it works - so have fun - rip out the oil filter also, while u are there..
was there any metal shaving in the oil.

U gotta lomy ideas on how to work hey....
Oil filter off, found a clutch plate snapped into 3 pieces.... Oil was good, no mettallic look to it or any shavings....
VSB_Fast
July 19th, 2008, 11:42 AM
wow, i never heard of a clutch plate breaking into pieces like that.
Lickshot, have a look at the seal that goes around the shifter shaft. It looks like you have had a long time oil leak dripping onto the bottom of the main frame. You probably want to fix anything suspicious you find while you have the engine apart. Also pop off the oil strainer and tube and clean them out, as there could be metal or clutch pieces inside.
The "whinning" gear noise could be worn gears or misaligned gears. The only thing i know of personally that would cause a 900rr trans gear to misalign is worn bearings.
You mentioned the seal by the front sprocket was leaking and you are replacing it; do you need to split the engine cases apart to do this?
Just curious so I know for future reference.

I don't really have anything to contribute to this thread. I just wanted to say you're a goofy looking bastard and ask what car is in the background behind the bike. Looks like it could make for a fun hotrod project.

Not sure what motor that is behind.... but wld defo be superb for conversion....
Im doin this in a mate grandads garage and he has four barns which are stuffed with rhe likes of .... A complete bonneville special, a very nice complete ducati original race bike dated around 50's - 60's....
loads of old world war trucks... big old trucks and vans , shit loads of old machinery.... loads of old triumph, bsa, triton frames and engines....
Fooooking aladins cave i teel ya!!!!
Anyhow.... VSB - It is the oilseal behind the front sprocket that is leaking and has been running down over the shiftr seal making it filthy.... the sump filter is off along with most other bits just need more pics as i was covered in oil and didnt fasncy covering my camera in the stuff.... If i manage to get up there later the crankcase should be off and ill have access to the gears and see what the prob is.... If its bearings i just hope its the 1 at the other end of the shaft as that 1 is real cheap and splits from the shaft..... other 1 comes on the shaft and dont fancy paying silly money to sort that.....
Ill get sum more pics of me playing with my bike getting all excited and having sex wee in my pants just for u TEARDROP.... oh sorry DROPTOP wernt it...... lol :Laughs
Bunch of piss taking sods THA LOT OF YA!!!!!!:Laughs:Laughs:Laughs

ROFL this banter is hilarious. I was gonna comment on the faces you were making, but Rob (Teardop) beat me to it, and handled it quite a bit meaner than I would have. Lol.
I did notice something in pic DSC00749.jpg - not sure if anyone else mentioned it - but there appears to be a crack/hold in a housing to the left of the circular filter. (Don't know any of the names of the stuff in the tranny) Is that what was brought up? Doesn't look right to me... :CONF

Really? That's your reply? The kids I coach sling better insults than that.
Anyway, I noticed the hoop earrings and was wondering if they were intended to augment your work skills. The hoop earrings would allow your ears to be be used as handlebars with increased efficiency. I'd figure that would allow you to charge an increased price. And with some diamond studs and a thrift store dress, you can do the "tranny surprise" for special events.
Jawhn- that's my friend Jeff. He's a rep for a very large motorcycle parts distributor. And he can ride the wheels off his 600RR. He made us all look slow around our 70cc backyard dirtbike track. But the more we drink, the faster we get... until we start crashing.

Mikerua - Theres nothing i want more than to get this completed.... went down to my local honda dealer this morning and just my luck they wer shut ;DOH
Am working 2moz so will send my girlfriend down to the dealers to order up my bits which come to around £100 inc VAT.... which aint too bad....
Im changing the two smaller needle bearings at the end of the shafts and the large bearing at the end of the main shaft too.... just not changing the big bearing at front as u have to buy it with the shaft and its stupid money plus it doesnt feel like there is any play in it like there does in the others....
And obviously replacing the oil seal that was leaking and the gaskets....
My girlfriend works for Hein Gericke and is supplying me with a magnetic oil filter, and i have a mate that has a huge drum of 10w 40 oil so that will be free to me.....:D
I have saved myself an absolute fortune doing this myself..... And also a lot of time by spinning bike upside down instead of removing the lump!!!!
Going to be very smokey when we start her up for the first time tho as im sure ther will be oil seapage into the bores..... ill make sure i get a pic of that 1 hey....
I just hope by changing the bearings stated it will eliminate my whinney box....
Want to get bits before sat so can get them fitted and bike up the right way round and filled with fluids ready to be fired up......
This thread has been a good crack with the banter thru it.... puts a smile on ya moosh when reading which keeps it entertaining.... And as for getting a room..... im more of a public kinda guy if u get me...:Laughs:Laughs:Laughs

just popped in to see how you are doing, been busy with my bike. When you pull cases apart, be careful the dowel pins and 2 oil jets (one big and one small). The dowels are the solid type and easy to lose (there are 3 of them)
When you pull the shafts out, check the forks and drums. Look in the book to get specs of the forks. You measure them at the end (thickest part) If anything is close to being out of spec, REPLACE IT. You don't want to have to do this again. Check the drum for burred edges. The edges of the grooves should be sharp. When you are putting the shafts back in, the one in the rear has a small locating pin that you have to put in notch in case. Tranny's are easy and save you a ton of cash. I get 500 bucks for labor (pretty easy money) but most shops and dealerships charge close to a grand for the same work. Check the edges of the dogs on your gears, they should be sharp with no rounding. If any of your gears are bad, just send both shafts off and have them back cut. The cost is about the same as replacing 2 gears and your bike will shift a helluva lot better. If you need any help, just holler! Good Luck

I finally have my bits... bearings have been replaces weather they neede it or not.... oil seal has been replaced... everything checked and put back how it came out.... Crankcase is back on and 2moro just needs everything sorting out and cleaning bolting back up and fill it up with new oil run her for 30mins or so and another fresh batch of oil slung in seeing as im geeting it for free!!!!!
Gotta make sure all is good.... With a bit of luck and fingers crossed im hoping i have eased some of the gearbox whinning noises and if not then i kno at least i have good bearings.....:D

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!! Hope it all works out. Now see, that was pretty easy, huh? Next time you have tranny trouble just tear it down and go at it. It will save you a small fortune. BTW, never heard of turning bike upside down before, I take my hat off to you on ingenuity. The engine on RR's is so easy to get in/out I never considered other possibilities...but hey, whatever works for ya!!

SHE IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!:V:V:V
And about time too!!! Boy have i missed my blade....:mc
I replaced both the needle bearings on the end of both shafts and 1 of the main bearings on the end of the shaft which left one bearing which would have cost me over £200 to replace as it comes on the shaft....
So three bearings replaced.... gaskets replaced.... oil seal replaced.... new oil and filter..... major internal clean up!!!!! and now its all back together with no oil leaks and even better i have got rid of the gearbox whinning which is a result as i thought it may have been due to something else other than the bearings.... So im well chuffed!!!!:D
Im really glad i done it, it has given me alot more knowledge and confidence on delving into major work on the bike....
And thanks to all those that have followed this thread and added their opinions... and added humour too....
