View Full Version : to hop up the 900 or not 2

been seeing people round here talking about hopping the 900rr up
like cams, heads, n so on. how much of a power gain are we talking about? say cams, in head work
any one know difference in power between 95- engine and 96+ engine
and is modding the 900rr engine worth the cost? been seeing alot of 929's for under 3 grand. and a few 945's for 3 grand on craigs list. think i read some where that they are 150hp at crank or flywheel or something like that
i love the sound of the 900rr, and for right now the bike has more power than i have driving skills.
and does increasing the power on the 900 take away from reliability

that 1st post of mine might have been confusing( i most times think of 10 or 15 things at once so i have to slow down and make sure things i say make sense)
is performance worth the money in upgrading 900rr engine
if so plz tell me best mods, n how much the cost
At this moment i dont want a drag bike
just want something i can drive on the street and scare the hell out of myself with but dont want to have it turned up so much that durability is compromised

Cheap, reliable, fast. You can only pick 2 of those 3. You'll get different answers from different people, but here is my take. A 945 with mildly ported head and cams is still going to be every bit as reliable as a stock motor. (I thrashed the shit outta my first 945 and it took everything I threw at it). As for cost...Alot depends on what you can do yourself. Piston kit will run you around 600 depending on what kinda deal you can get. Boring will run you around 200. A fairly decent port job (with valve job and new springs) will run you around 1200 from somewhere like Starr racing. Cams will run you around 5-600. That's around 2600 bucks for a bike that will normally make around 130 hp (give or take). You can sometimes get good deals on ebay that may offset some of that. (I got my 997 kit brand new for 300 bucks). Is it worth it? Only one that can answer that question is you. Hope that helps.

Spend your money on suspension upgrades (like a ELKA 3-way, Racetech springs and valves) and on riding lessons (like California Superbile School or its local equivalent) plus track days. These are investments that pay dividends and increase the speed, quickness and longevity of you and your bike.
Plus some kind of loud exhaust so people think you're making more power:Laughs

suspenion... definately and if u really got$ burnin in your pocket lighter wheelz are a huge upgrade i think, slightly moded(jets/full exhaust.. not2shabby on the power stock) as all kno im a big fan of the flatslides.. (fcr39 carbs)they are a little excessive sometymes...no choke;DOH little quirkey 4 just plain riden but very strong power if you are lookin 4 that type of thing:skep: i like riden the bike w/stock carbs very "civil" much better all around driveability... not long b4 im crave'n the clatt'r... that sound means its gonna b a great tyme:V

fcr? where i find that?
i had a flat side carb on the blaster i built, think i had the blaster round 30+hp
,stock was round 13-16 hp, but that was a waste of cash I had 3 grand into it and any 450 would smoke it. and when i sold it.......... lost my ass
kinda want 2 keep the 900rr under 3 grand so if i sell it i wont lose out much
i have 2 get a new avatar. i took this one 1 day when drove it over 2 where my brother works ( scrap yard)

can find em like i did on ebay.. then u "will" need 2 buy some jets h ave extensive trial &error sessions.. consultation w/cbr racer77 many tymes throttle cables different filtration system modified... im in now almost a grand and the fun factor last season was worth everypenny as well as every teer. they work like a liteswitch.. literally. my adv. try and find a set from some1 on here if u want them.. you missed a couple sets recently that went pretty cheap;DOH

Asphaltsurfer is right, a couple sets went cheap (cheaper than I've seen in a while). Maybe some more will come up for sale. 3 grand can be spent pretty quickly. Just gotta decide where you want the improvements. You can make some pretty good power with 3 grand IF you can do most of the work yourself (remove/install head, pistons,etc.). If you have to pay someone, it will probably cost you more than your budget. You will NEVER come close to getting it out of it when you sell. I stopped figuring how much I have in mine years ago:Laughs Just depends on where you want to spend it. Ghbzorro made an excellent point about the suspension upgrades. How close to TN are you?

Jar, you've already said it has plenty of power...
My suggestion is to get some new gearing. Way cheaper, and will make you feel like king of the world for about $50.
I'm running 15/45. Stock is 16/43. Those three teeth make my bike feel like it's going to tear my arms off. Front wheel likes to lift. Life is good. :EG
Just my 2¢. If you wanna make your engine badass, go for it. But $50 is a good starting point to see if that's all you want/need.
Buy steel sprockets.

i kinda don't want 2 get smoked by any 600cc
i was riding with a 600gsxr, we both hit it in 3rd gear to 130mph and i did not pull on him a bit ( i didn't have rear mirrors at the time but when i let off gas he went past me that sec) think it was an 03-04 gsxr

Gearing is an excellent suggestion. Another cheap solution is to bump the compression a bit. You can safely take 15 thousandths off head with no worries (maybe run better grade gas) or you can clay it if you want to really "squeeze" it. That shouldn't cost you more than about 50-75 bucks at good machine shop (provided you can remove/install head yourself). Don't feel too bad about the 600. Those things are pretty badass to be so small. Take Jawhn's suggestion and you should pull on him in 3rd like crazy.

the gear thing will kill top end right?
reason i ask is my brother has a stretched n moded busa. and rest of his friends have 1000's or 1200's.......takes me looking at what i am writting 2 see how dumb that was lol
i guess i can ride with them till a bill n half
biggest reason i wanted 2 mod the engine was to use taller gears lol:D

cbr900racer77 and 66droptop are both excellent sources on here that will gladly help you get your spray set up. Rob (66droptop) said BITD that to set up a wet system, would only run around $600...? :CONF

lol i am not wanting to race my brother just ride with him , crap just guessing his bike with the mods he has is over 200+hp and has 99 comp so no top end limiter, he has a NOS bottle just waiting 2 go on it , i hope he never puts it on becuse he just rides street not track, on his gears he went bigger on front and smaller on rear and still smokes tire to 100mph. i am not really sure what all he has done to bike just say that when im in 3rd gear( i like 3rd doesnt pull up like 2nd and 1st gear) he will go past me so fast feels like i am moving backwards.
but reason i made this post is its winter and i have now till it warms up to get my bike where i want it at. seems for the money the flat side carbs sound like i should look into them. and thx for all the idea's every 1 who replyed

X2. For 3 grand, a power adder is bout the only thing that's gonna get you riding with a 200+ hp busa.

So the thread started at "should I modify my bike" and ended at "add forced induction", seems like a long ways from the original post. :)
My personal approach has always been to upgrade to a newer bike. The manufacturers continually improve the bikes every year. Moving up to a 929 would cost much less than modifying an older 900. I have a friend with an 02 RC-51 and some financial problems, he was desperate to sell and only got $2800 for it. I've seen a 954 locally for 3k from another distressed seller.
Track oriented riding classes are an outstanding investment.
I'm lucky to ride 3,000 miles a year, so the thought of tearing the bike apart (even in winter) and not having it to ride isn't appealing to me.
But, to each his own, so good luck on however you proceed.

I don't know this person or anything about the bike, but here's another local 954 for only $3,500:

Seems cheap to me, but I'm not in the market and don't know what they're really worth.

my bike had a cold air mod when i got it. wouldn't be hard 2 turn it to ram air i don't think, but i wouldn't know what 2 do to airbox if there is even anything to do 2 the air box
some thing i seen a while back i forgot 2 say ( i have 2 900rr's the 95 and a 97 parts bike) when i took the carbs off the 95, the intake was smooth, when i took carb off the 97 the intake was ruff, makes me wonder if some one took a dremel to it or? maybe some one had some work real work done?
and 1 thing i have asked before is the 1995 has a 893cc engine (i think its 893 i cant remember) the 1997 has a 919cc engine, is there any difference in hp? its like 20cc+ difference
because i think the 97 engine is good. person i got it from said the engine was good but stuck in 1st gear. but it turned out the shifter was stripped out. i used a vise grip and shifted it through all the gears rockin it back in forth. i haven't yet tried 2 start it.

You are kidding right? If not I will let you know a little bit about scammers!
I saw an RSV1000R Mille in the AZ Bike Trader one time for like 2500.00. So I called the number, her message stated that she had no such bike, doesn't know motorcycles, and didn't know how her number got onto a listing. So then I emailed the person. They email me back stating that they are overseas, the bike is with them (Europe of all places). And all I would have to do is send them the money and they will ship the bike. Now mind you, this isn't bad. But when I asked for pics, they sent me pics of a cherry limited edition Collin Edwards replica bike that was signed by the man himself! This bike was an easy $20K bike! Selling for 2500.00 to a US person from Europe (one of the biggest italian bike place in the world!)
Now the dipshit that sent the pics, left a car in the background with a georgia plate on it. I just so happened to have a friend in the US Marshals. He did some research on the plate number and got me the guys name and phone number. I called him. Asked him nicely if he owned this bike. He was like "yes, why do you ask". I told him what was going on. That guy thanked me and then called me like 5 months later..... The guys trying to scam people to buy bikes they don't own got arrested and are in jail due to me calling this guy and letting him know! I thought that was way cool!!!! Fuckers deserve it!

Scams come in two flavors: Easy-to-spot and "Oh shit, I fell for it." The latter is the most evil. :(
And I'm not endorsing this book, other than the title... :EG

Good for you! There are some great deals out there. I just picked up a near cherry 94 900RR for $1390 in So-Cal. It was part of an estate sale. I won the auction with a best offer. All my friends told me it was fake, but I talked to the dude on the phone, and flew down to San Diego to pick it up. Rode it back to Boise, ID the next day. Too good to be true is not always true. This bike is so clean I cannot even explain it....
Sometimes you have to have faith, and take a leap. Just do it in an educated manner. Those who always say it is a fake quite often miss the deals. When the deals do come up you have to be ready to jump on them...

I love my 93 CBR, I've driven a 929 and hated it.
Mine has a 919 engine as I blew the gear box road racing in the stock engine and found this motor cheap. It has a milled head, 5 angle valve job, Two brothers coated header and can, advancer, jet kit, K@N, I removed the snorkels and the plastic seperator up front so the air box gets fresh air, changed the gearing and even tired, I could rip off 10.6-10.8 in the 1/4 mile, and hang with R1's and ZX9's on the track, back in the late 90's.
I love the look and feel of these bikes plus I'd be lost without the trunk. As for parts, if you crash it or whatever, it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg to fix it and they are so reliable, its not funny. I honestly have probably 200,000 K's on the engine-drag racing, knee dragging racing, endurance race's and tons of street riding and it STILL doesn't burn oil, :V
