As someone who occasionally does split between cars, I gotta say it's very unsafe.

I lived on CA in 1988 and 89. Splitting lanes (when cars are expecting it) is plenty safe. Bikes were the best way to get around out there.

Maybe I don't have the right idea, I think of splitting lanes as when two vehicles are in your way and going the same speed, and you accelerate and pass in between them. On the hwy is where I imagine this going down. It works with quick accelerating vehicles like ours, but if someone tried to change lanes they would squash you. (someone turned into my lane unexpectedly just the other day, no warning, no blinker, while I was in the lane right beside them...blind spot I guess). Also if the cars are stopped on the hwy and you go in between them someone might open their door while your passing, that wouldn't be pretty.
