    Default CBR900RRX electrical issues

    Guys,

I have a CBR900RRX ~ with an electrical issue when trying to start it.
When I turn on the ignition the Neutral light and Oil pressure light on the dashboard both light up brightly but when I press the starter button, nothing happens and the two lights go out and stay out. Ignition off and back on again and the two lights come on but are dim and after a few seconds they go out on their own and stay out. After a few tries when the ignition is switched on, the two lights don't come on and the bike appears dead.

That's the problem ~ here is what I have tried.

The battery voltage is 12.7v and I regularly connect a battery conditioner. I have disconnected, cleaned and reconnected both +ve and -ve battery cables at the battery and at the various connections at the starter solenoid, chassis and engine. The resistance in the connection between the -ve battery terminal and the chassis is 0.2 ohm (it's the same for the +ve terminal.
I have checked the main connectors on the wiring loom for corrosion and not found any problems. There does not appear to be any chafing on any part of the wiring loom.
All fuses that I know of have been checked (including the main 30A fuse) and all are OK.

The bike appears stone dead. With the ignition on, there are no lights on the dash or front and back position lights, the starter does not respond.

The one thing I have heard is when the two dash board lights go out, there is a faint click like a relay re releasing.

I am more than likely missing something ~ has anybody any helpful hints.

One last thing, the bike has a data tool alarm fitted. It was working at first but seems to have gone into hibernation for the winter.

This is going to sound crazy, but I suspect you have a dead battery. Sometimes, when batteries get older and have seen a lot of cycles, the plates can corrode to a point where they break off and dead-short. These things start with a D-cell compared to my Aprilia, and while the battery voltage may look good, it doesn't have enough with one cell down to turn over. Just a thought.

    A good thought, my friend.

Sorry for the delay in replying ~ you were not crazy. Just spot on! That is exactly what was needed ~ a new battery! I was fooled by the battery condition. The Honda started at the second touch of the starter (after not running for ages due to Covid lockdowns).
I look forward to Spring (when there is no salt on the roads) when I can get out on the road for a run.

    Ride safe.
